Tables, units and significant figures

A results table must preserve raw evidence and present calculated quantities with consistent precision.

Scientific data table

Headings contain quantity and unit; raw readings preserve instrument precision and calculated values use justified significant figures.

By the end of this lesson, you can:

  • construct a single results table;
  • write valid quantity and unit headings;
  • record raw and calculated values;
  • use appropriate significant figures.

Table structure

Place all raw and calculated data in one table. Put the independent variable first and include repeated readings where they are taken.

Column headings

Write quantity symbol divided by unit, such as l / m or V / V. Units belong in headings, not beside every data value.

Precision

Raw readings should reflect instrument resolution. Calculated values usually have the same significant-figure precision as the least precise input. Keep decimal places consistent within a column.
